Face and Neck Lift

Face and Neck Lift

It is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:

  • Relaxation of the skin of the face causing sagging
  • Deepening of the fold lines between the nose and corner of the mouth
  • Fat that has fallen or has disappeared
  • Jowls developing in the cheeks and jaw
  • Loose skin and excess fat of the neck that can appear as a double chin or « turkey neck »

The aim of this operation is not to change the form and aspect of the face. But simply by restoring the different anatomical structures of the face and neck (the skin, the muscles and the fat) enabling the patient to look as he or she did some years earlier

Other procedures that might be performed in conjunction with a facelift are brow lift and eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes. Fat transfer or fillers may be suggested to replace the lost fatty volume. Skin treatments such as stemcellinjection, dermabrasion, peels or laser may be offered to improve the quality and texture of the skin.

Who are good candidates for face/neck lift
  • Healthy individual without medical conditions that impair healing or increase risk of surgery
  • Non-smoker
  • Individual that is committed to leading a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and fitness
  • You have excess skin following significant weight loss
Consultation :

During your consultation surgeon will:

  • Evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors
  • Discuss your facelift options
  • Examine and measure your face
  • Take photographs
  • Recommend a course of treatment
  • Discuss likely outcomes of a facelift and any risks or potential complications
  • Discuss the type of anesthesia that will be used

Procedure

  • Most facelifts are performed in a hospital under general anesthesia
  • A variety of other procedures can further enhance the outcome of a facelift. They include:
  • Facial implantsor fat transfer to improve contour
  • Resurfacing techniquesto improve the tone and texture of facial skin
  • Wrinkle reductionby fat grafting (nano fat and Micro fat)

Depending on the degree of change you’d like to see, your facelift choices include a traditional facelift, minifacelift or a neck lift.

A traditional facelift incision often begins in the hairline at the temples, continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp. Fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, jowls and neck and underlying tissue is repositioned, commonly the deeper layers of the face and the muscles are also lifted. Skin is redraped over the uplifted contours and excess skin is trimmed away.

A second incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve an aging neck. Sutures or skin adhesives close the incisions.

A neck lift addresses the sagging jowls, loose neck skin and fat accumulation under the chin may need to do liposuction. The neck lift incision often begins in front of the ear lobe and wraps around behind the ear and ends in the posterior hair behind the ear.

The incisions will be closed with sutures that may dissolve or may need to be removed after a few days. Once healed, the incision lines from a facelift are well concealed within the hairline and in the natural contours of the face and ear. For men this surgery has its particularities the skin is thicker, the position of the beard may change; scars are harder to hide if hair is thin or thinning.

Risks

Is it Safe?

Facelift risks, while rare, include :

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing and skin loss
  • Facial nerve injury with weakness
  • Temporary or permanent hair loss at the incisions
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
  • Persistent pain
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Prolonged swelling
  • Skin irregularities and discoloration
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications

These risks and others will be fully discussed prior to your consent.

Is it painful?

You will have some discomfort, however, this is expected and typically easily controlled with pain medications. Discomfort will dissipate over a week or two after the surgery. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication for you to take after you return home.

Recovery

Recovery normally takes around 2 weeks, and vigorous activity can resume after 4 weeks. Sutures are removed about 5 to 10 days after surgery. Incisions and bandages must be kept dry, and the patient should follow the specific instructions about bathing and washing.

It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions, as this will speed the healing process and allow for the best possible result.

Numbness and muscle stiffness is normal for some time. Scars can take nearly a year to fade and tone down.

Results

The visible improvements of a facelift appear once swelling and bruising subside. While most people are presentable to the public within 10-14 days, it will take 2-3 months for the face to feel « back to normal » in terms of texture, sensibility and loss of tightness. Your final result should not only restore a more youthful and rested appearance, but also help you feel more confident about yourself.

Follow your physician’s instructions to ensure the success of your surgery.

Things to keep in mind

  • As amazing as the results from your neck lift surgery can be, please keep in mind that as a restorative surgery, a neck lift will not change your fundamental appearance and cannot stop the aging process.
  • A full neck lift is a surgical procedure, and non-surgical treatments will not be able to achieve the same results. They may, however, help to keep your skin healthy appearing and maintain a youthful appearance longer.
